SYSTEMS APPLICATION SPECIALIST
General Definition of Work:
Under general direction, performs advanced technical work assisting in configuration, collection and maintenance of various databases including state reporting of Student Information System data.
This is an exempt position.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Configuration, setup, and maintenance of data in the following areas: student information system, state reporting, special education database, cafeteria database and transportation database.

- Prepares and submits various state and federal reports and data collections.
- Assists with scheduling and supervising the operation of centralized computing resources for grade reporting, test scoring/reporting, and attendance monitoring.
- Works with and trains users on current hardware and software.
- Installs and supports software applications.
- Provides back-up for other IT staff members.
- Responsible for assisting with the organization and management of the centralized student records archive, in accordance with current policies and regulations.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot problems for end-users.
- Provides services and management support to assist with division-wide technology needs.
- Punctuality and commitment in meeting work requirement deadlines.
- Performs related tasks as required and other duties as assigned by the director for information technology.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience supporting IT applications and student information systems; advanced level SQL / T-SQL knowledge and database functions; experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Servers (SSRS) and/or Microsoft Power BI. Programing experience with PHP and/or PYTHON. The ability to troubleshoot and diagnose end-user problems; experience with various database platforms; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all those contacted during work.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred and/or computer information systems. Certifications with Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, Microsoft SQL Server, or Microsoft Certified IT preferred. Demonstrated experience supporting IT applications and Student Information Systems preferred.
Physical Requirements:
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
